2020 really shifted the fashion landscape in terms of increased consciousness around consumption and the push for trends. Fashion leaned towards neutral colour schemes, and comfortable and versatile items to suit both lounging at home and heading out for a quick grocery store run or occasional pop-in to the office. As a result, we got some pieces that - I think - have become new fashion staples, with designers considering the long-term wear as customers held a little more tightly to their hard-earned money.

In this post, we’re looking at some of the stand-out items from 2020 that are still going strong into 2021 (and just may be our “new classics”). So, keep reading to see which items have made the list.

Blazers

Blazers were in the spotlight last year, and they continue to shine into 2021. This classic closet staple was highlighted as an outerwear option for both casual and dressier looks; from jeans and t-shirt, to a satin dress. Boxy silhouettes, shoulder pads, or more structured silhouettes are reigning supreme, but blazers in general are a closet staple that never really go out of style. A blazer is a classic, never-out-of-style staple item, but as a long-term items, I recommend opting for a more structured fit in a classic colour or print, like beige or a checkered print for optimal wear in seasons to come.

Blazers are great outerwear options to add structure or classy spin on a casual outfit, and you look instantly chic! So, have fun with styling blazers and wear them with joggers, jeans, or some bike shorts for the summer.

Chunky Gold Jewelry

2020 saw chunky, clunky versions of hoop earrings and necklaces take center stage in accessories. Gold hoops are very much still going strong, from large hoops to smaller, more understated ones.

Chunky chain necklaces are still very much around for this year, providing an easy way to level up a a t-shirt or sweatshirt. This necklace style has become my favourite.

Shackets

The intersection of a shirt and jacket: the shacket. This item became a staple layering and outerwear piece in 2020 and it is not going anywhere anytime soon, making it an easy piece to carry into 2021. As we move into the warmer months of Spring and Summer, many shackets featured will be mainly in lighter fabrics or denim and twill materials. However, if you have a shackets from the fall/winter season in a heavier material, like faux leather or flannel, they will serve a great outwear piece for the spring or on cool summer evenings, providing an alternative to a traditional trench coat or denim jacket.

Loungewear

I think a lot of us have come to appreciate the styling versatility of a good pair of joggers and a sweatshirt. I definitely have been wearing joggers more than I ever have, and have been having fun styling them in different ways. That all being said, loungewear is not going anywhere in this year. From joggers, sweatshirts, and hoodies; to knitwear co-ord sets and t-shirt dresses, the options for loungewear pieces are numerous! So, have some fun styling your loungewear in new ways to re vamp your looks and have some fun with your outfits, even when you’re just lounging at home.

Loose Fit Jeans

With quarantine and WFH days making us appreciate the comfort of pants with some breathing room for our legs, mom jeans and relaxed, straight leg styles provide a comfortable way for us to take a break from the sweatpants and leggings. The good news is that jeans are remaining comfortable *praise hands*, with this year’s styles featuring wide-leg and loose-fit silhouettes.

Which of these 2020 “it” items do you plan to rock in 2021?

Let me know in the comments!

Peace & Blessings,
